Four Calhoun students were among the more than 1700 high school Family and Consumer Sciences students and their teachers that gathered March 25-27, 2012 for the 66th annual Missouri FCCLA State Leadership Conference held at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, Missouri. The conference was sponsored by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
The following Calhoun FCCLA members attended the conference: Mistie Wharton, daughter of Linda Wharton; Bryan Molder, son of Donald Molder and Treva Horn; and Allyson Mendenhall and Stephen Mendenhall, daughter and son of Jeff and Michelle Mendenhall. Local chapter advisor, Kathy S. O’Dell also attended the conference.
Family, Careers and Community Leaders of America is a Career and Technical Student Organization for young men and women who have taken or currently enrolled in a Family and Consumer Science education courses. Since 1945, FCCLA members have been making a difference in their families, careers and communities by addressing important personal, work, and societal issues. Missouri FCCLA ranks fourth in the nation in membership with more than 11,500 members. There are 327 FCCLA chapters across the state.
The conference centered on the student-developed theme “Dare to Be Different: Not Just Another Teen Conference.” The conference featured speakers and workshops on topics such as preparing for college and careers, bullying prevention, and technology’s impact in education, careers, and on the family. In addition to leadership training, honors and recognition, more than 800 students participated in 33 STAR Events; these competitive events included entrepreneurship, culinary arts, job interview, preparation for careers in education, and chapter service projects.
Bryan Molder competed in a STAR Event, while Stephen Mendenhall worked as a judge for a different STAR Event. Mistie Wharton and Allyson Mendenhall attended leadership conferences and served as a support team for Bryan as he competed.
Competitive event winners at the state conference will advance to compete during the National FCCLA Leadership Conference to be held July 8-12 in Orlando, Florida. The opening session began at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The keynote address was delivered by Thomas Dismukes, a motivational speaker from Tennessee. Mr. Dismukes discussed having F.O.C.U.S. in life while he entertained the audience with balancing tricks. |
