Positive Behavior Support

What is School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports?

1. “What is School-Wide PBIS?”

Improving student academic and behavior outcomes is about ensuring all students have access to the most effective and accurately implemented instructional and behavioral practices and            interventions possible. SWPBS provides an operational framework for achieving these outcomes. More importantly, SWPBS is NOT a curriculum, intervention, or practice, but IS a decision making framework that guides selection, integration, and implementation of the best evidence-based academic and behavioral practices for improving important academic and behavior outcomes for all students.

2. “What Does School-Wide PBIS Emphasize?”

In general, SWPBS emphasizes four integrated elements: (a) data for decision making, (b) measurable outcomes supported and evaluated by data, (c) practices with evidence that these outcomes are achievable, and (d) systems that efficiently and effectively support implementation of these practices.

SWsystem

These four elements are guided by six important principles:

· Develop a continuum of scientifically based behavior and academic interventions and supports

· Use data to make decisions and solve problems

· Arrange the environment to prevent the development and occurrence of problem behavior

· Teach and encourage prosocial skills and behaviors

· Implement evidence-based behavioral practices with fidelity and accountability

· Screen universally and monitor student performance & progress continuously

3. What Outcomes are Associated with Implementation of PBIS?

Schools that establish systems with the capacity to implement SWPBS with integrity and durability have teaching and learning environments that are

· Less reactive, aversive, dangerous, and exclusionary, and

· More engaging, responsive, preventive, and productive

· Address classroom management and disciplinary issues (e.g., attendance, tardies, antisocial behavior),

· Improve supports for students whose behaviors require more specialized assistance (e.g., emotional and behavioral disorders, mental health), and

· Most importantly, maximize academic engagement and achievement for all students.

4. What is a Continuum of SWPBS?

SWPBS schools organize their evidence-based behavioral practices and systems into an integrated collection or continuum in which students experience supports based on their behavioral responsiveness to intervention. A three-tiered prevention logic requires that all students receive supports at the universal or primary tier. If the behavior of some students is not responsive, more intensive behavioral supports are provided, in the form of a group contingency (selected or secondary tier) or a highly individualized plan (intensive or tertiary tier).

Text Box: What is a tardy sweep?

With our new Eagle Excellence program we wanted to reduce the amount of tardy students we were having in the junior high and high school.

When the bell rings at the beginning of each class, the teacher will close their door and any remaining students in the hall must go to the office to get a tardy slip. They can then return to their class as usual.

The tardy sweep has been incredibly successful. We had just one tardy in the junior high/high school building on the first day of school!

We are also limiting when students can leave their classrooms in the JH/HS. The first and last 10 minutes of class are restricted. Students may not leave during those time periods. Once the ten minutes have elapsed at the beginning of class, then they can request to leave the classroom, up until the last ten minutes of class.
Text Box: I have a golden ticket!

With our Eagle Excellence program we want to reward all students k-12 who meet our behavior expectations throughout the day. All faculty and staff have tickets to give no matter where the students are. Many children arrive at school with tickets from their bus driver!

Students (k-12) collect the tickets each day and they are allowed to shop from the eagle excellence store. The elementary school has its own store as does the high school. They can get drinks, food, and school supplies.

At the end of each quarter we have an assembly with the elementary students. We give away prizes to students that decide to put some of their tickets in the bucket to be drawn. This teaches them to make choices. They can either shop in the store or save tickets for the chance to win bigger prizes at the end of the quarter.

We also reward the class that is clean with the golden dustpan. The bathroom that stays cleanest through the quarter gets the golden plunger award. And, the class that keeps the cafeteria the cleanest gets the golden lunch tray award. A teacher is also chosen as the Eagle Excellence Teacher of the Quarter.

We have behavior expectations posted in the halls of our buildings. We have a matrix/chart that the SWPBS team developed to outline the behaviors we expect to see throughout the buildings, on the buses, etc. Please remind your child to
be responsible,
be respectful, and
be safe!
